They have been able to provide appropriate solutions, and have been flexible in adapting those when necessary as a result of discussions and recommendations from the local conservation officer. They have also been able to provide raw materials in accordance with traditional building methods (e.g. period bricks).
In addition, they have been able to demonstrate their specialist knowledge and expertise to the local conservation officer. This has helped considerably by easing any concerns they may have had in approving the repairs.
Renovating our 1540’s property in Cambridgeshire, John and his team of craftsmen have executed an excellent renovation taking the old lathes and plaster away and replacing the oak timber in many places. We have found their work to be of a high standard at all times. The team are all excellent at the different skills they undertake and we would have no hesitation in commending their services to you for your project.
We fell in love with and purchased an 18th century timber framed cottage. We knew that it required work but it rapidly became came obvious that the repairs needed were more significant than the purchase survey had indicated.
The first builder we contacted quoted half the value of the house to repair it and frightened us with tales of it crumbling around our ears if we didn’t go with his specialist team.
Significantly unnerved we searched online and found 4 other builders specialising in old buildings. The next builder offered to ‘fix us up’ in 2 weeks and suggested replacing the 200 year old beams with pine, the others were more measured but JH Building Restoration was our last and happiest contact.
They have, from the beginning, provided realistic and sensible advice and shown us that our house is not about to fall down, and that repairs are part of an old building’s evolution. That they can enhance a building and work can be phased to match your budget.
Thanks to John and his team our unanticipated problems no longer appear a disaster, just a nasty hiccup.
He is always at end of the phone or an email with knowledgeable advice, his quotes and responses are always prompt, and he has checked up on the work and how we are feeling at every step. His team are polite, tidy and efficient and obviously highly skilled craftsmen.
Our only regret is that we didn’t take advice from JH Building Restoration earlier.

The chimney is looking amazing, I cannot wait to see it in all its glory once the scaffold is down! What I can see of it is a thing of utter beauty restored to its former glory.
I really cannot fault the quality of the work and how genuinely your team care and take pride in their work. They have already cleared the mess from the gutters and are currently hosing down the slate roof, sweeping the pathways and washing the patio!
